Basic Information About Academic Programmes
This Faculty was founded in 1951, at first as a paediatric branch and later, in 1953, as an independent Faculty of Paediatrics. It became the Second Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in 1990. The Second Medical Faculty educates future specialists in general medicine. The primary goal of this faculty is to educate students in healthcare issues, beginning in the prenatal period. The evolution of all medical problems is followed at this faculty. Graduates from master study programmes in General Medicine may start to practise medicine as family doctors or as paediatricians. Theoretical and preclinical subjects are studied during the initial four years in independent institutes of the faculty. Clinical subjects are studied in the fourth, fifth and sixth year in hospital complexes, in the Motol hospital and/or in other medical institutions in Prague. During the summers of the fourth, fifth and sixth year, students are required to work in hospital wards in the area of internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology, obstetrics and paediatrics. The study branches of the bachelor study programme in physiotherapy are studied on a full-time basis. All lectures are delivered in Czech. Graduates from physiotherapy programmes find employment in rehabilitation centres, clinics, etc., either in the public and private sector.

Lifelong Learning
Another possibility to study at the Faculty is to take part in short-term courses (including the University of the Third Age). The courses are offered by the Faculty within the framework of life-long education programmes. Graduates from these courses obtain certificates or credits.

Admission
Applicants are accepted only on the basis of entrance proceedings. All applicants must take an entrance examination. It includes written tests in biology, chemistry and physics. In the second part of the entrance procedure the applicants are tested for their suitability for medical studies and, in an oral interview, have an opportunity to explain their reasons for studying medicine. In 2009/2010, the number of applicants to the Faculty was 1475. The Faculty selected 220 applicants, i.e., 14,9 % of the candidates, for admission.

Information for Foreign Students
Entrance examinations for international students are held in July and in September. The content of this examination is similar to that taken by Czech students. In addition to the general requirements for the admission of international students that are stated in the introductory chapter, the Faculty requires a vaccination against hepatitis B. In the master study programmes leading to the MUDr. degree, all lectures are delivered in Czech and in English. During the initial years international students learn the Czech language in order to be able to communicate with patients during their internship in hospitals. International students can also study the bachelor study programme that is offered in Czech only. The tuition fee for international students is CZK 350,000 per academic year for master studies, and 6,500 USD for Ph.D. studies.
