Basic Information About Academic Programmes
The Faculty of Social Sciences was established in 1990. This faculty prepares students for work in state and public administration, political parties and movements, social counselling and services, all types of mass media, financial institutions, management, marketing, foreign services and various international organisations. The best graduates can do research work or teach at universities. Only graduates from bachelor study programmes can enrol in master study programmes. Master study programmes may follow on from a bachelor study programme, but this is not always the case. The best students are encouraged to study at or visit foreign universities and foreign political or economic institutions. The faculty also offers doctoral study programmes in social sciences, political and historical studies, economics and media studies.

Lifelong Learning
The faculty offers short study visits, and also various courses within the University of the Third Age. More information is available on the faculty web site, or may be obtained from the Students' Department.

Admission
With the exception of students who wish to study economics, all applicants must take both oral and written entrance examinations. The written examination for all applicants includes questions related to the historical and cultural background of the study programmes chosen. Applicants who wish to study economics or sociology must also take an examination in mathematics. Applicants for journalism and mass communication are required to take an examination in the Czech language. All applicants must also take a foreign language examination. The oral examination consists of general cultural and historical questions, and sometimes includes a test in a second foreign language. Only those applicants who are successful in the written part are invited for an interview. There is no oral examination for applicants who wish to study economics. In 2009/2010, the number of applicants to the Faculty was 5016. The Faculty selected 1103 applicants, i.e., 22,0 % of the candidates, for admission.

Information for Foreign Students
In addition to the study programmes offered in Czech, the faculty also offers master's study programmes in International Economic and Political Studies, and Economics in English. As with other Master degree programmes at the faculty, both these programmes are only open to students who have already completed (or are about to complete) a Bachelor's degree. The faculty also organizes short study visit programmes. The visiting student status is most suitable for students who are already enrolled at a different university abroad, and who wish to familiarise themselves with the situation in the Czech Republic. Tuition fees for international students are as follows: - Master study programmes taught in English: EUR 5,600 per academic year - Non-degree course in English: EUR 2,500 per semester.
