Basic Information About Academic Programmes
The Charles University Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Kralove was founded in 1945 as a branch of the Prague Faculty of Medicine of Charles University. It soon became an independent faculty of this University. The Faculty offers a bachelor study programme in Nursing (part-time studies). The faculty also offers master study programmes in general Medicine and Dental Medicine (master study programmes are only provided on a full-time basis). Theoretical medicine subjects are studied in the first two study years, and in the following years the curriculum covers pre-clinical and clinical subjects. The basic science part of the curriculum includes courses in anatomy, histology, biophysics, biochemistry, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and an introduction to clinical disciplines. The clinical part of the curriculum of general medicine consists of courses in intenal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology and obstetrics, neurology, psychiatry, radiology, ophthalmology. The clinical part of the curriculum in dental medicine includes courses in therapeutic dentistry, dental surgery, prothetic dentistry, and orthodontics. Students are exposed a wide range of clinical experience and their studies provide them with the knowledge, abilities and skills they need to be effective physicians.

Lifelong Learning
The faculty offers preparatory courses for applicants within the framework of life-long education programmes.

Admission
Applicants for medicine and dental medicine studies at the Faculty of Medicine are required to take entrance examinations in physics, chemistry and biology. Applicants for the nursing programme have to pass both written and oral entrance examinations in nursing, dental medicine and health system organization. In 2009/2010, the number of applicants to the Faculty was 1612. The Faculty selected 437 applicants, i.e., 27,1 % of the candidates, for admission.

Information for Foreign Students
Since 1992, the Faculty has organised master study programmes in the English language for international students. Up to 60 places are available each year in the first year of the courses taught in English. The entrance examination and the entire study programme is organised in the same way as the study programme for Czech students. Additionally, Czech language courses are provided for international students during the first and second year of study to prepare them for communication with patients in their clinical lessons. The curricula of the Czech-language and English-language Medicine and Dentistry study programmes are identical and they are fully in line with current international standards. The bachelor study programme in Nursing is only offered in Czech. Foreign applicants are required to take a preparatory Czech language course. Accommodation at student halls of residence is available for about USD 80 per month. The tuition fees for international students are as follows: Master study programmes taught in English: 8,900 EUR per acadademic year Doctoral study programmes taught in English: 5,000 EUR per acadademic year.
