Basic Information About Academic Programmes
The Third Medical Faculty provides a master study programme in General Medicine with a Preventive Focus. The curriculum is in line with the Recommendations on Undergraduate Medical Education adopted by the Advisory Committee of the Commission of the European Communities in October 1992. The master study programme takes six years, the first two years being devoted to basic sciences, the third year to preclinical subjects, and years four through six to clinical work. However, this distinction is not absolute as students come into contact with patients from the second year on. Preventive medicine is included in both theoretical and clinical courses. From the third to the fifth year, students, in addition to the core curriculum, choose at least one from the approximaPhoney seventy elective courses available in all medicine programmes. The elective portion accounts for some 10 % of the total course load. In the sixth year, students have to pass state examinations after an internship in the relevant department (medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, or preventive medicine). Apart from the six-year master study programme, the Faculty offers also bachelor study programmes.

Lifelong Learning
Another possibility to study at the Faculty is to take part in short-term courses (including the preparatory courses for applicants taught in Czech or in English, and the University of the Third Age). The courses are offered by the Faculty within the framework of life-long education programmes. Graduates from these courses obtain certificates or credits.

Admission
The entrance examination consists of written examinations in biology, physics and chemistry, a psychological test and a personal interview. In 2009/2010, the number of applicants to the Faculty was 2006. The Faculty selected 476 applicants, i.e., 23,7 % of the candidates, for admission.

Information for Foreign Students
International students can study in English, but they are expected to acquire a good understanding of the Czech language in order to take part in clinical training courses which begin in the third year of study. The tuition fee for international students is CZK 290,000 or an equivalent sum in US dollars or EUR.
