Basic Information About Academic Programmes
The task of this institute is to prepare skilled specialists for experimental research and process control in industry and academia, mainly using physical methods in biology, biotechnology and medicine. MSc. and Ph.D. studies include lectures delivered by top international specialists and visits to allied foreign laboratories. The Institute offers BSc studies in Informatics, Applied physics and informatics (with Pedagogical Faculty), in Biophysics (with Faculty of Biological Sciences); MSc studies - in Applied physics and informatics (with Pedagogical Faculty) and inBiophysics (with Faculty of Biological Sciences); PhD studies in Biophysics; and lifelong learning courses in physical biology. The main subjects of basic and applied research are as follows: - Physical biology - optical instrumental techniques, software, theory of dissipative systems (including theoretical and computer projects). - Biophysical chemistry, biochemistry, bioinformatics, molecular biology - the structure, function and interactions of proteins (including theoretical and computer projects). - Ecophysiology and environmental technology -interactions of energy and living organisms with the environment. - Biotechnology - new biotechnological approaches based on detailed knowledge of physiology and targeted modulation of metabolism. Recruitment of new students is organised as a system of summer schools for secondary school and university students. In 2003, over 90 participants - mainly from the Czech Republic and Slovakia - attended. the summer school.

Lifelong Learning

Admission
Applicants must have completed their secondary school education and must have passed a secondary school leaving examination. There is an entrance examination in the main subject of the selected study programme. In 2003, 10 students were accepted in the Ph.D, programme in Biophysics, more than 30 students are due to be accepted in the Applied Measuring and Information Technologies study programme in 2004.

Information for Foreign Students
The Faculty offers all the aforementioned study programmes for foreign students in the Czech language. Accreditation of programmes taught in English is prepared for the academic year 2005/2006.
