History of school
The University of West Bohemia was established by the Act of the Czech National Council in 1991, when the Institute of Technology in Pilsen and the Faculty of Education were merged. The Institute of Technology was founded in 1949 as a branch of the Czech Technical University in Prague. In 1953, it became an independent institution and began to grow rapidly. In 1960 it was divided into two faculties - the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. For the greater part of its existence, the Institute provided courses for students preparing for careers in mechanical and electrical engineering. Two new faculties - the Faculty of Applied Sciences and the Faculty of Economics - were established in 1990, a few months after the Velvet Revolution. The predecessor of the Faculty of Education was founded in 1948 as a unit of the Faculty of Education of Charles University in Prague. For some time it operated as an independent Higher School of Education, then as an Institute of Education and, since 1964, as an independent Faculty of Education. Its mission was the training of teachers at both primary and secondary schools. Since 1991, the College of Education has been a part of the University of West Bohemia. In 1993, two years after the University of West Bohemia was founded, a sixth faculty - the Faculty of Law - was established in order to meet the increased demand for legal education arising from the changes in the Czech economic, social and legal systems after 1989. A seventh faculty - the Faculty of Humanities - was established in February 1999. Today - together with the Faculty of Medicine, which is a part of Charles University in Prague - the University of West Bohemia is able to provide higher education in most major subject areas. Although it attracts students from all over the country and abroad, its main focus is the education of students of the West Bohemian region. The University is the only institution of higher education in this part of the country which prepares local and foreign students for a wide variety of careers: in engineering (electrical and mechanical), in science (computer science, applied mathematics, physics, mechanics), in education (both primary and secondary school teachers in a wide range of subjects), in economics, humanities (philosophy, languages, sociology, fine arts) and in law.
Structure of the Institution
The University of West Bohemia comprises the following seven faculties: Faculty of Applied Sciences Faculty of Economics Faculty of Education Faculty of Electrical Engineering Faculty of Humanities Faculty of Law Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Institute of Art Design Each faculty comprises several departments. The departments are responsible for the provision of courses and for research. They provide courses not only for students enrolled at that particular faculty, but often also for students at other faculties. This close inter-faculty co-operation makes it possible to exploit fully the inPhonelectual potential of the academic staff and to give the students an opportunity to benefit from interdisciplinary programmes. The University Accreditation Board monitors the quality of the courses on a continuous basis.

Organisation of studies
The University of West Bohemia offers study programmes at all levels - bachelor study programmes, master study programmes and six faculties - the faculties of Applied Sciences, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Humanities Study, Education, Law and Mechanical Engineering - also provide doctoral study programmes. A bachelor study programme aims at providing a qualification to enter a profession or to continue studying a master study programme. It takes 3 years (180 ECTS credits). Graduates receive the academic degree "bakalář" (i.e. "Bachelor"), abbreviated as "Bc." A master study programme may follow on after a bachelor study programme. In this case its length is 2 - 3 years (120 - 180 ECTS credits). There are also l master study programmes that do not follow on after a bachelor study programme. In this case they last 4 - 5 years (240 - 300 ECTS credits). Graduates receive the academic degree "inženýr" (i. e. "Engineer") abbreviated as "Ing." or "magistr" (i. e. "Master"), abbreviated as "Mgr." The standard length of a doctoral study programme is 3 years. Graduates receive the academic degree "doctor" (i. e. "Doctor"), abbreviated as "Ph.D." In 1996, the University was considered to have met the requirements for inclusion in the "List of Schools and Courses" of the FEANI index. This entitles its graduates to apply for the award of the title EUR ING. The main form of study at the University is a full-time study. In addition to this, all faculties offer part-time study in some fields. The curricula are similar to those for full-time programmes. Most faculties provide so-called "Certificate Programmes" as part of their provision. These include Fundamentals of Economics, Management, Philosophy, Environment, Quality Control, Design, American Studies, and English/ German/ French/ Russian for Engineering Professions, etc. There is also an opportunity for students from faculties other than the Faculty of Education to obtain a teaching qualification in subjects taught at those faculties. Students who have completed a "Certificate Programme" are awarded the relevant certificates in addition to their diplomas. The credit accumulation system introduced in the academic year 1993/94 allows students to make independent decisions concerning the optional part of their study programme and to organise their class schedules accordingly.
Student Services
The Deans' Offices and the academic staff provide counselling on academic matters; the International Office offers assistance in matters concerning everyday life and accommodation. The libraries situated in the centre of the city have a total book stock of over 2 million volumes and subscribe to about 2,000 different journals and magazines. The University has its own halls of residence which offer services to full-time students, and canteens which serve lunches at a very reasonable price from Monday to Friday. The Sports Centre, located close to the University campus at Bory, offers excellent facilities including indoor halls, gymnasia, swimming pools, and tennis courts. The University also owns a chalet in the Ore Mountains and another in the Czech Forest. In addition to this, the University has recently acquired the Nečtiny castle, a conference centre, not far from Pilsen.

A list of study programmes offered as part of the PSP is given in a Student Brochure specifically designed for this purpose.
