History of school
The University of Olomouc was founded as a Jesuit Seminary in 1566. Jesuits governed the University for over 200 years, with the Faculty of Theology and Faculty of Philosophy playing the main roles. History, ancient languages, mathematics, physics and astronomy were popular subject staught during this period. In 1848, as a punishment for the students' active role in the revolution, a process of closing down the University got under way, and in 1860 the institution ceased to operate. On February 21, 1946, the Czechoslovak National Assembly decided to re-establish the University in Olomouc, and gave it the name Palacký University. In the course of its history, several changes have occurred in the structure of the University. The 1989 November Revolution inspired the most recent ones. The University is growing rapidly: the St. Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology has been re-established, and two new faculties have recently been added: the Faculty of Physical Culture, and the Faculty of Law. Outstanding scientists and teachers connected with the University include Jakub Kresa (mathematics), Marcus Marci of Kronland (physics), Johann Gregor Mendel (genetics), Karel Slavíček (astronomy), and Jan Tesínek (physics).

Master study programmes: "magistr" (i.e. "Master", abbr. as "Mgr."), "doktor mediciny" (i.e. "Doctor of Medicine", abbr. as "MUDr."), "doktor filozofie",(i.e. "Doctor of Philosophy", abbr. as "PhDr."), "doktor přírodních věd" (i.e. "Doctor of Natural Sciences", abbr. as "RNDr."), "doktor práv" (i.e. "Doctor of Law", abbr. as "JUDr.") Doctoral study programmes: "doktor" (i.e. "Doctor", abbr. as "Ph.D.")

Student Services
The Central University Library houses more than one million volumes. Each faculty has a reference library. The University halls of residence can accommodate about 4,000 students. All the facilities are situated in the centre of town and are easy to reach by public transportation. There is a number of intercollegiate and intramural sports and recreational facilities (University Sports Centre, University Training Centre).

Information for Foreign Students
Foreign students can study at all faculties of the University. Palacký University offers Bachelor (3 years), Master (4-6 years) and Doctoral (3 years) studies in full-time programmes. Most faculties also offer individual study programmes within postgraduate studies. The language of instruction at the University is Czech. Students enrolled in Czech-language study programmes do not pay any tuition. They only pay for their accomodation and meals, books, study materials and some non-refundable fees (e.g., USD 25 application fee). Foreign students are required to pass oral and written entrance exams held in Czech, in which they compete for enrolment with native Czech students. The competition is quite strong, especially at some faculties. Therefore, fluency in Czech is, essential. The University has Socrates-Erasmus agreements with several European universities and runs several tailor-made programmes for US colleges and associations. There is only a limited number of study programmes instructed in languages other than Czech (i.e., in English, French, and Russian). The tuition fee for programmes taught in a foreign language may vary from USD 5,000 to USD 8,000 per academic year (see each faculty's financial requirements). International students intending to enter a study programme in Czech are required to take oral and written entrance examinations in the Czech language (a very good command of Czech is necessary, because admission is based on competition). Foreign students wishing to learn the Czech language are encouraged to enrol in the Czech for Foreigners course organised by the Faculty of Philosophy. The course fee per one academic year is USD 5,000. When an international student is considering a study visit to one of the Palacký University's faculties, he/she should think over and clarify his/her study plans: i.e. the subjects he/she wants to study, at which faculty, what level and what degree he/she would like to achieve, in which language he/she would be able to study. After clarifying all these matters, he/she should fill out an application form. Those interested in learning something about Czech culture, life and history and about the country itself and in practicing the Czech language can submit their applications for the Summer School of Slavonic Studies. It usually takes place in July. The participants appreciate the study programme of high standards combined with a rich and interesting cultural experience. Accomodation in one of the university's halls of residence (for those who apply in due time) and board in student canteens are guaranteed for all international students. To cover the living expenses (excluding tuition) one should budget approximaPhoney USD 300 per one month. The actual costs, of course, depend on the student's individual needs and standards. All individual requirements should be negotiated with the appropriate department or, as the first step, you may address your queries to the Student's Department at the Dean's Office of the faculty, or to the International Liaison Office of the University.
